NEW EFFICIENT ASEPTIC PACKAGING LINE TO EXTEND PRODUCT SHELF LIFE

García Carrión 1890, S.L. has carried out actions to strengthen the agri-food sector within the PERTE to promote the circular economy through the project “New efficient aseptic packaging line to increase product shelf life.” (ENVASEPTIC).

The project will develop a new aseptic packaging line (blower-filler-sterilizer-capper) for fruit juices and non-carbonated juice-based soft drinks for various bottle formats, which will increase the shelf life or commercial life of the products produced, reduce the weight of the bottle and the generation of waste. In addition, this new line will enable the use of 100% rPET thanks to weight distribution and packaging using caps that are permanently attached to the bottle (integrated cap). The new line will significantly improve the shelf life of the finished product, mainly because, on the one hand, it allows nitrogen injection, allowing filling in an inert atmosphere, which prevents oxidation of the product that detracts from its organoleptic characteristics and leads to consumer rejection. Furthermore, the new aseptic line also has a more effective sterilization system, even allowing for the pre-sterilization of the bottle preform, which will guarantee less microbiological contamination, resulting in a significant reduction in food waste.

The project “New efficient aseptic packaging line to increase product shelf life” is a beneficiary of the call for grants to promote the circular economy in companies for 2022 from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITECO) within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

PECTINS Project

Project name: “NEW STRATEGIES FOR THE USE OF ORANGE PEEL AIMED AT THE PRODUCTION OF PREMIUM QUALITY PECTINS”

  • Project number : IDI-20200708
  • Beneficiary company: CITRICOS DEL ANDEVALO SA
  • Place of execution: Huelva Plant.
  • Start date: 03/15/2020
  • Deadline: 09/14/2022
  • Total budget: 510,493.00 EUR
  • Funded budget: EUR 433,919.05 (co-financed by the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) and by the European Union through the ERDF Funds)

CITRICOS DEL ANDEVALO strives to maximize the utilization of its byproducts. Don Simón currently converts more than 200,000 tons of orange peel into value-added products such as pet food and essential oils. The company also has a project to manufacture a PET bottle from orange peel.

In line with this strategy, the current PECTINAS project aims to reuse orange peels , a byproduct of the juice production process, to extract high-quality pectin using environmentally friendly methods.

The aim is to research new sustainable pectin extraction processes that will optimize its quality and diversify its technological applications. The project also aims to design and develop a plant that will allow for the validation of the process's scaling, validating it in a first real pilot project.

Furthermore, the remaining residues from pectin production are intended to be characterized for subsequent application as biomass in the generation of biofuels.

PHAGEPROTECT Project

Project name: “Application of bacteriophages against the pathogen causing greening in citrus plantations”

  • Project number : IDI-20190738
  • Beneficiary company : CITRICOS DEL ANDEVALO SA
  • Place of execution : Villanueva de los Castillejos (Huelva)
  • Start date : 01-09-2019
  • End date: 04-28-2022

  • Funded budget: EUR 436,622.05 (co-financed by the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) and by the European Union through the ERDF Funds).

The objective of the PHAGEPROTECT project is to investigate possible solutions to prevent the destruction of citrus groves as a result of HLB (greening). To this end, potential bacteriophages will be investigated, isolated, and identified, establishing their persistence, distribution, and application formulation in orange groves. The ultimate goal is to determine the efficacy of the selected bacteriophages.

Currently, there are no known solutions to neutralize the disease once the tree is infected, so this project aims to be a milestone in the sector and will provide a competitive advantage not only for the company itself but also for Spanish agriculture in general.
