Pata Negra

A moment that changed our history

A PATA NEGRA FOR EVERY MOMENT

― Eight designations of origin under a single brand ―

Pata Negra represents one of the most revolutionary movements in the world of wine in our country: using a single brand to encompass different designations of origin. A strategy that would change our history forever. Today, Pata Negra is present in Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Valdepeñas, Rueda, Toro, Cava, Jumilla, and La Mancha.

Pata Negra wines represent the flavors of our land and are ambassadors in more than 150 countries for the unique characteristics of each wine region where we produce our wines. Pata Negra has won over all palates thanks to its unmatched quality, backed by various awards in leading national and international competitions, and has become a global benchmark.

JUMILLA

Art turned into wine

The perfect place for making an Apassimento-style wine, such as our Apasionado. This wine is an explosion of fruit and passion. The designation of origin is located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Mediterranean province of Murcia. The area is known for its high temperatures throughout the year.

RIOJA

Art turned into wine

Rioja represents the origin of quality wine in our country and, since 1991, has been the first Qualified Designation of Origin. This wine region is located in the north of the country, between two mountain ranges that form a valley with the ideal climate for growing grapes. Most of the wines produced in this region are reds, made from the Tempranillo variety: the grape that best represents Spanish wines. This grape can produce red or black fruit profiles, depending on the microclimate in which it is grown and the type of wine it is intended for. As for white wines, most are made from the Viura variety, resulting in fresh and aromatic wines.

RIBERA DEL DUERO

A wine rocked by the river

Where the fruity and expressive wines that wine lovers around the world adore are born. This designation of origin is located in the northern half of the country, geographically located on the northern sub-plateau of the central plateau. As its name suggests, it is located along the course of the Duero River.

The grape native to the area, Tinta del País, is a clone of Tempranillo that is adapted to the Mediterranean-continental climate, characterized by low rainfall and large temperature fluctuations. Due to the drastic temperatures in this area, the grapes are smaller and have thicker skins, providing natural protection against adverse weather conditions, which results in more concentrated and structured wines.

TORO

A noble wine with intensity

The great discovery of the last century: sandy soils that give the wine unparalleled power. This designation of origin borders the Rueda D.O. to the west. It is not as close to the Duero River, so the soils are less fertile (they do not have as much water), especially those composed of sand and stone.

Thanks to these poor soils, it is one of the only areas in Spain where it is possible to find ungrafted vines. This means that it has not been necessary to graft the plant onto a phylloxera-resistant rootstock, as the insect itself has not been able to survive in such a hostile environment.

LA MANCHA

All the flavor of the world's largest vineyard

The world's largest vineyard. This region boasts the largest concentration of vineyards on the planet, producing the excellent wines of La Mancha: whites, reds, and rosés.

For centuries, the vines that produce the most elegant grapes have grown in its characteristic reddish-brown clay soils. The traditional goblet training method shapes the wine-growing landscapes of this area. Endless expanses of vineyards, with perfectly arranged plants that bring harmony to the natural landscape.

RUEDA

A wine with a unique character

When we talk about producing quality white wine in our country, we talk about the Rueda Designation of Origin. This region, located very close to the Ribera del Duero, is also influenced by the river, and the vineyard soil is therefore typically stony or gravelly. The climate is continental, cold in winter and hot and dry in summer.

In addition, most of the vineyards are between 700 and 800 m above sea level. This makes it a suitable area for growing white varieties such as Verdejo, which is native and authentic to the area. To a lesser extent and on exclusively selected plots, Rueda also has plantations of the Sauvignon blanc variety, which produces exceptionally aromatic wines in this climate.

CAVA

A toast to the best moments

This designation of origin guarantees the quality of sparkling wine produced using traditional methods. It originates in the Penedès region of Catalonia, which enjoys mild temperatures in winter and warm temperatures in summer. The soil and climate make this Mediterranean region a unique place for growing grapes. Specifically, the grape varieties that are best suited to this environment are Xarello and Parellada, which are native to the area, as well as Macabeo. The traditional method used to make these sparkling wines involves a second fermentation inside the bottle itself, naturally producing the bubbles that remain in the wine until it is consumed.

MUCH MORE THAN A SPECIAL EDITION

Be Strong, Be Clever, Be Fast

Fauna Ibérica occupies a special place in our commitment to the environment. This edition helps us remember the importance of protecting our country's animal species, highlighting three animals characteristic of the Iberian Peninsula: the Iberian lynx, the fighting bull, and the Iberian wolf. We also include the Iberian fox. Pata Negra is committed to using designs on its labels that feature animals that are characteristic of Spanish fauna and are in danger of extinction. We defend and value our fauna just as we defend and value our land.

OUR HISTORY

We tell you our story, from its origins in Valdepeñas to its consolidation and recognition throughout the world as a revolutionary brand built on the values of exclusivity, quality, and diversity.

1890

Our story begins in Valdepeñas. At that time, thousands and thousands of liters of wine were sold from the Señorío de los Llanos winery, including young wine, crianza, and reserva. In exceptional harvests, the winery chose to produce a special limited edition gran reserva wine. This wine was bottled and dressed with a black capsule, instead of the usual dark red capsule. That's why, when customers bought it at the winery, they called it “the wine with the black label.”

The sales team also began to colloquially refer to this wine as “el Pata Negra,” referring to the quality of the grapes (made only with the best harvests) and the quality of the wine itself (bottled with the best materials in the winery).

1987

The Pata Negra brand is registered and the first bottle is launched, a 1978 Pata Negra Gran Reserva with the Valdepeñas designation of origin. This first bottle marked the beginning of a great story, our story. It saw the birth of the brand that forty years later we proudly call “the most awarded brand.”

2007

Until now, there were two adjectives that could be used to describe Pata Negra: exclusivity and quality. Now, a third one has been added: diversity. We began with an expansion that made a difference, and Pata Negra began to conquer other designations of origin.

2015

The Pata Negra project is finally underway in different wine-producing regions. First came Rioja and Ribera del Duero, followed by Rueda, then Toro, Cava, Jumilla, and finally La Mancha. This is how Pata Negra became the first multi-DO brand. Now, the eight designations of origin offer wines that guarantee the quality and diversity that characterizes our country.

Actuality

With more than 400 medals in leading national and international competitions, rewarding not only its excellent quality but also the innovative character that has marked Pata Negra from the beginning, today we continue to break with tradition, making our brand a fun, carefree wine that is ideal for celebrating every occasion, no matter how big. Because there is a Pata Negra for every moment.
